Q) I've
never sailed before and would like to try it out
- can I?
A) Certainly, the best thing is to come visit and
show some interest, get talking and someone will
offer to take you out in exchange for a pint of
the usual. You'll probably need to do the some training if you don't
know the fore from your aft - get in touch with
an
and they'll point you
in the right direction.
Q) I want to come and have a look
around, when's the best time to visit?
A) During the summer come down on a Wednesday
evening (there's a BBQ and the bar will be open)
- racing starts at 7pm, alternatively, come down
on a Sunday afternoon (the main sailing day).
Most people will be willing to talk boats but
don't expect too much of a response if you strike
up a conversation 5 minutes before the start of a
race!
Q) I'm not too sure I fancy racing,
can I still go out?
A) The only time you won't be allowed out is when
we're running a big open
meeting. Its perfectly OK to go out when club
racing is on - there's plenty of water so just
pick a part of the reservoir where you aren't
going to get in the way.
Q) When can we sail?
A) Whenever you want on Wednesday, Thursday and
all Weekend. During the fishing season you have
to stay away from the banks (inside the red limit
buoys) but during the winter you can use the
whole of the water (all 300 acres of it!)
Q) Where can I buy a boat from?
A) If you're just starting out then it'd be
better to use a club boats
rather than jump in and buy an unsuitable boat.
Have a chat and a walk around the boat park to
see what's popular at Blithfield. The notice
board by the entrance is a good source of local
boats and it's also worth having a look in the
back of 'Yachts and Yachting'
magazine. If you've decided on a specific fleet, the class
association website will have a secondhand list.
Alternatively, you could save your cash and take
up a crewing job in someone elses boat.
Q) Do I need to buy lots of equipment
and clothing before I start?
A) If it's hot and summery weather then you can
sail in shorts and t-shirt (buoyancy aids must be
worn and can be borrowed from the club). However
as it gets round to winter you'll need to invest
in the proper gear to keep warm. There might be
some secondhand equipment on the notice board, or
if crewing, your helm might have some old gear to
borrow. Our closest chandlers is Speed Sails, who are helpful
and have a good selection.
Q) I need a crew - where can I pick
one up?
A) Have a look on the 'crews available' board.
Or, if you want a crewing job then put your name
down on the list. |
