The History of Sailing
(According to Osprey, Merlin and RS400
sailors)
The story starts with
Ospreys, presumably, before that people used to race
galleons or something. Like all design icons, the Merlin
Rocket as it later became known, was designed down the
pub on the back of a beer mat. Allegedly, some Osprey
sailors wanted a boat that less heavyweight crews,
especially women, could sail competitively. Then RS400,
made by LDC sailboats, came onto the scene. It was
designed by one of the original Merlin designers, hence
the similarities.
Comments from all parties:-
Osprey - Having a harness for the crew
to hang of the side, "It isn't a proper boat without
a trapeze on it"
Merlin - Being a development class,
"Ooh look, a carbon fibre rig, and titanium pulley
blocks, is that a kryptonite rudder?, etc etc"
RS400 - Being all new and plasticy,
"Mmm shiny"
...to be continued?
